We are a coalition of local labour activists, community organizers, and residents, residing on the unceded, unsurrendered territories of the Algonquin nation
As people from all walks of life, we believe deeply in equity, human rights and social solidarity; affirm the need for fair, consistent public health measures and strong public services in all communities; support every person’s right to respect and decent working conditions; and recognize that we must take action to achieve true reconciliation as a country.
We affirm our common determination that despite the disruptions of recent times, we can work together for a better future based on values of social, economic, racial and climate justice.
Basis of Unity
Community Solidarity Ottawa is committed to building strong communities based on social, economic, racial, and gender justice. We are anti-fascists who practice trans-inclusive intersectional feminism. We know that the rising tide of fascism is a common threat to all people. We do not rely on police or electoral politics to protect us and our communities. We oppose and deplatform fascists wherever they gather. We aim to continue growing anti-fascist movements so that we are prepared to meet the shifting focus of the far right.
We know that working class solidarity is both our best defense and our only path towards a better future. Anti-fascist actions remind us that silence is consent, and neutrality in the face of fascism is not an option. Solidarity is a practice, not a statement.
CSO was formed out of the convoy occupation of February 2022, when it became clear that the state and law enforcement will not protect us from the rising violence of the far right and that a collective response to the politics of division and hate is necessary. Our work continued after the convoy occupation, as fascist, homophobic, transphobic, and white supremacist movements continued to threaten us, our communities and loved ones.
As residents of the Ottawa-Gatineau region, we recognize that we reside on the unceded, unsurrendered territories of the Algonquin nation. We recognize that Canada was built and is maintained through bloodshed, colonization and deals made in bad faith. We are committed to decolonization and the return of this land to its rightful stewards.
